Up until the last two decades, there has been little written about the psychoanalyst’s retirement process. Many analysts chose never to retire and worked into old age. Some became ill and continued to practice. Additionally, colleagues did not always respond favorably to those who were considered too young to retire. There was a stigma and it left younger analysts with very little insight and few guidelines into what is now considered an expected developmental progression. Freud himself never really retired and continued to take on and see longstanding patients up until the near end.

This program is an attempt to speak to the complexities of retirement as it is understood and lived out today. Three seasoned, retired psychoanalysts will address the ethical, clinical and personal factors that went into their decision to retire and how they navigated those issues. These include issues around how much notice to give their patients, how they managed a changing analytic identity, how they handled patients in distress, the benefits of retiring before one needs to and what they would change. By sharing their experiences, the hope is that this will assist other psychoanalysts in thinking through this important professional milestone. There will be an open question and answer period after each presenter to help facilitate discussion.
