Psychoanalytic Fellowship Program

Learn foundational psychoanalytic principles.

About

Psychoanalytic principles find application in a variety of fields and disciplines and can provide advanced students, psychiatric residents, and graduate mental-health practitioners with valuable fundamental insights in their professional development and careers. In this tuition-free program, fellows learn through exposure to case studies, background reading, and engagement with a diversity of faculty and colleagues. Optional scientific meetings add an enhanced opportunity to explore psychoanalytic thought and practice.

The Psychoanalytic Fellowship Program is designed for individuals who have a significant interest in psychoanalysis as a body of knowledge and as a framework with which to understand and carry out therapeutic efforts. The primary focus is psychoanalysis in an adult context, but includes several cases focused on children.

At each session, a member of the WBCP faculty will present a psychotherapy or psychoanalytic case that invites and includes active discussion. WBCP encourages multidisciplinary exchange and promotes engagement with a variety of thoughts and perspectives. A large aim of the program is for fellows to gain insights into their own work through exposure to psychoanalytic principles and approaches.

For advanced graduate students and psychiatric residents as well as recent graduates in psychiatry, psychology, social work, and professional counseling. While the program is designed for those at the earlier stages of their careers, mid- and later-career clinicians and scholars seeking additional psychodynamic and psychoanalytic exposure can also benefit.

Curriculum

The Psychoanalytic Fellowship Program currently consists of 12 two-hour seminars with case presentations by practicing psychoanalysts on clinically-related topics. The program includes case presentations of adults and children in psychoanalytic treatment and psychotherapy conducted with psychoanalytic and psychodynamic principles.

Through these case studies, the program delivers an underlying curriculum that builds foundational understanding of psychoanalytic principles. During each presentation, fellows are actively encouraged to engage with the presenter, ask questions, make comments, address the transference, identify defense mechanisms, and make connections between childhood experiences and presenting symptoms and conflicts.
