Program Description:

The Matrix has been a sci-fi classic since its release in 1999. Queer folks began speculating about the trans themes of the film shortly thereafter and speculation only increased as the film’s co-writers and directors, the Wachowski sisters, transitioned in the 2010’s. But it wasn’t until 2020 that Lilly Wachowski publicly confirmed that the film was originally intended as a trans allegory. This presentation will revisit the Matrix within this framework to explore themes of gender identity development, coming out, transitioning and societal resistance, all within our current sociopolitical context of bills, bans and violence against trans bodies. As the Matrix reminds us, trans stories have always been here and always will be.
