CODA
Date: April 11, 2025 Presented by: Dr. Kevin Popp Time: 7:00pm - 10:00 pm Where: Baltimore Museum of the Arts 10 Art Museum Drive, Baltimore, MD 21218
Presentation Description:
Some may say that CODA is about love. In CODA, Ruby, the hearing daughter of two deaf parents, works to find her place in the world, after prioritizing most of her life to helping her family. While gaining her independence, Ruby maintains the devotion she has for her family. Dr. Popp believes that the film taps the depths of feeling that psychoanalysis attributes to the earliest stages of life–the first years of the “maternal time,” and so establishes a deep affinity with the viewer, even as the movie is part of a phenomenon–sensory difference in a family and the wider world–that potentially leads to separation and distance. Mr. Bertell will explore themes of maturation, separation, individuation, guilt, communication, and rupture and repair.
