SUMMARY:Psychoanalytic Takes On Cinema: Session 3 of 3: Discussion of the film "Please Stand By"- Karen Weise\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:*** Film must be viewed prior to event. *** \nDiscussion of the film “Please Stand By”\n \nFriday\, February 27\, 2026\n4:00 pm – 5:30 pm\nVia Zoom \n2023 (93 min)\nDirector: Ben Lewin\nDiscussant: Karen Weise\, PhD \nA young autistic woman runs away from her caregiver in an attempt to submit her 500-page manuscript to a “Star Trek” writing competition at Paramount Pictures. \n  \nPresentation This presentation will consider how racially crafted stereotypes located in literary and film works have permeated artistic mediums over the last century. Jefferson’s American Fiction depicts an esteemed scholar and novelist frustrated by the narratives published in the literary world that perpetuates racial stereotypes influencing the ways in which people of color are imagined and understood in the world.  Within this presentation\, racial stereotypes frequently depicted are examined understanding that their insidious residue exist within quotidian dynamics\, including therapy rooms.  This film carefully examines the roles artists and audiences have to uphold racial stereotypes within present day artistic expressions\, while challenging one to consider how minority artists have contended with these stereotypes and navigated systems that depict their identity as the other. American Fiction directly confronts these systemically racially charged dynamics while being curious regarding whose voices and narratives are silenced and whose are celebrated. \nDiscussant: Karen Weise\, PhD is a clinical psychologist and child/adolescent psychoanalyst based in Washington DC. She obtained her PhD in clinical psychology from City College in New York (CUNY) and completed her psychoanalytic training at the Hampstead Clinic (Anna Freud Centre) in London. Over the past twenty-five years she has been a staff psychologist at Children’s National Medical Center in the Developmental Clinic\, as well as at the Reginald S. Lourie Center for Infants & Young Children. She has long been involved in psychoanalytic education and is on the child faculty of the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis\, and is the chair of the Child & Adolescent track in the PsyD program at George Washington University (DC)\, where she has been core faculty for more than ten years. She is the current President of Division 39\, Section II (Child/ Adolescent) of the APA and holds the office of Councilor in the Association of Child Psychoanalysis (ACP). SUMMARY:Psychoanalytic Takes On Cinema: Session 2 of 3: Discussion of the film "Me Before You"
DESCRIPTION:*** Film must be viewed prior to event. *** \nDiscussion of the film “Me Before You”\n \nFriday\, January 30\, 2026\n4:00 pm – 5:30 pm\nVia Zoom \n2016 (120 min)\nDirector: Thea Sharrock\nDiscussant: Katherine Marshall Woods\, Psy.D. \nA girl in a small town forms an unlikely bond with a recently-paralyzed man she’s taking care of.\n \nPresentation: It has been a long-standing question regarding whether an individual has the right to take their own life. This question has invited both legal and moral considerations into the conversation. Physician Assisted Suicides have become legal in America in thirteen states and the District of Columbia for certain individuals/patients. Me Before You explores the affective response and behavioral manifestations that occur with the loved ones of those who have accepted a PAS. Examining the range of grief experienced\, coupled with the diligent use of defense mechanisms to emotionally cope with the person’s chosen manner to end their life is illustrated in this film event. \nIn this talk\, we will discuss the dynamics present within the film Me Before You in thecontext of age and SES. We will also have the opportunity to screen Pat Basstini’s short\, Dignity (2020)\, and explore similar and differing dynamics given the season in life the characters find themselves. Participants will have an opportunity to speak with the filmmaker at the event. \nDiscussant: Katherine Marshall Woods\, PsyD\, is a media psychologist and licensed clinical psychologist in Washington\, DC. SUMMARY:Psychoanalytic Takes On Cinema: Session 1 of 3: Discussion of the film "The Thing"
DESCRIPTION:*** Film must be viewed prior to event.*** \nDiscussion of the film “The Thing”\n \nFriday\, November 14\, 2025\n4:00 pm – 5:30 pm\nVia Zoom \n1982 (109 min)\nDirector: John Carpenter\nDiscussant: Alex Smith\, Psy.D. \nA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims. \n  \nPresentation At surface level fantastical\, appalling\, and occasionally comical\, horror renders that which is unthinkable or unspeakable into inhuman\, slimy\, or spectral forms\, presenting the taboo or the overwhelming at a safe\, controllable distance from the self. In horror\, unthinkable and unspeakable aspects of the “self” can be experienced as the monstrous “other” and exorcised with flamethrowers. The horror movie generates credibility through performance\, photography\, and effects that ground the viewer in a “reality” that can then become credibly unreal. This magical reality evokes archaic experiences of the self as unbounded and vulnerable\, taking on challenging\, unsettling thoughts and feelings while allowing for the suspension of the neatly boundaried “I” of the viewer. \nJohn Carpenter’s The Thing belongs to a rich tradition of paranoia and body horror in the uncanny narrative and horror cinema. The self\, here under the condition of isolation and environmental confusion\, becomes vulnerable to external corruption. The un-integrable impulse is cast off\, producing a disintegrated state. Then\, in the presence of an alien “other”\, the once familiar body is usurped. The mind is subsumed. The “me” becomes a “me” copy that is at once terrifying and terrified\, its sole purpose being to consume additional “others.” The Thing is an allegory for the mental mechanisms of unbounded consciousness: not only the body\, but also the psychological boundaries constituting the self\, are at risk. \nIn working on this allegory\, we will briefly touch on horror cinema’s enduring interest in paranoia and the unbounded consciousness. We will consider Clara Keane’s clairvoyant work on existential permeability and Andre Green’s psychic envelopes as regards their explanatory power for experiences of unbounded consciousness\, paranoia\, and uncanny encounters. We will see how The Thing\, as an apex of creeptastic cinema\, resonates with our own experiences—both archaic and present-day—of the fragility of our distinct\, boundaried sense of a “me”\, and why it matters. \nDiscussant: Alex Smith\, PsyD\, completed his postdoctoral fellowship and additional trainings in psychoanalytic theory\, psychotherapy\, and supervision at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the Washington School of Psychiatry. He is an Associate Professor at George Washington University. He has led classes in psychological assessment\, psychotherapy\, ethics\, and the writing of the horror story. Alex has a private practice in Washington\, DC.\n \nPre-registration is required via the WBCP website at http://wbcp.org. SUMMARY:Psychoanalytic Takes on the Cinema: Discussion of the Film: "The Shining"
DESCRIPTION:1980 (144 mins)\nDirectors: Stanley Kubrick \nA family relocates to an isolated hotel for the winter\, where a sinister presence influences the father into episodes of violence while his psychic son sees horrifying forebodings from the past and the future.\n \nPsychoanalytic Takes on the Cinema: Discussion of the Film: “The Shining” \nDate: October 25\, 2024 \nTime: 4:00pm – 5:30pm \nPresenter: Alex Smith\, PsyD \nWhere: Via Zoom \nRegistration Link: Here\n \nProgram Flyer: Here \nRegistration Deadline: October 23\, 2o24 \nPresentation Description: \nAs in all great horror cinema\, Kubrick’s The Shining (1980) uses the haunted house motif to iterate upon essential human problems. The Torrances have kept their most overwhelming thoughts and feelings at some precarious distance\, only to encounter them in toto in the Overlook Hotel\, a repository of cast-off intrapsychic material. Jack Torrance’s thinly-veiled rage and vulnerability\, now laid bare\, plunges the family into unboundaried chaos. Kubrick’s interest in the border between constriction and absurdism adds additional layers to the film\, where what at first seems to be comical visual chaff adds not only texture\, but meaningful fragments of disallowed impulses. \nIn horror cinema—where less conscious thoughts and feelings are realized in ghastly acts and fantastical forms—the haunted house remains an evergreen motif. Indeed\, the haunted location remains a nearly universal fascination\, reaching across cultures and generations. Like other horror motifs\, the haunted house represents an exercise in the cozily distanced investigation of the most painful aspects of the human experience. What might be overwhelming if recognized and processed internally is parceled out onto the external. Ghosts\, hallways gushing blood\, and iced over hedge mazes—while less human and fantastical—become containers for our most primal fears\, conflicts\, and overwhelming ideas. \nTogether\, we will consider the horror narrative from a psychoanalytic lens\, and the haunted house motif specifically. From there\, we will develop some rudimentary morphology within the idea of projection\, taking an interest in the idea of the disembodied and the embodied as overlapping yet unique projective mechanisms. With these general ideas in tow\, we will investigate the rendering of the thematic material within the implausible and the absurd in The Shining.

SUMMARY:Psychoanalytic Takes on the Cinema - XXY
DESCRIPTION:Psychoanalytic Takes on the Cinema \nDiscussion of the film XXY(2007) \n \nDirector: Lucia Puenzo \nAfter a chance encounter on the street\, a woman tried to encourage a pregnant domestic abuse victim to see help. \nDiscussant: Helen DeVinney\, PsyD \n  \nDate: April 26th\, 2024 \nTime: 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm \nVia Zoom \nThis presentation will consider how Lucia Puenzo’s XXY imagines a world where an intersex child\, Alex\, is allowed to exist without a need to constantly take up definition and legibility in order to be legitimate. With the family in Uruguay in a kind of social retreat\, Alex simply exists\, as opposed to her existence being presented as an inherent burden or dilemma. The film carefully subverts the male gaze to offer Alex a subjectivity independent of the viewer’s gratification and curiosity. The film also provides an opportunity to consider how the autonomy of an intersex child can be supported or stymied by their parents’ ability to tolerate uncertainty and to challenge their own gender anxiety. The film presents an opportunity to consider how psychoanalysis can also uphold or challenge the male gaze\, confront or collude with anxieties regarding the categories and stability of gender\, and encourage liberation or compliance when working with intersex patients and/or their parents/caregivers. \nDiscussant: Helen DeVinney\, PsyD (she/her) was writing her dissertation in English when she realized that practicing psychoanalytically-informed psychology would allow her to better blend critical theory\, self-inquiry\, and social justice as a lived practice. She completed both her Psy.D. and postdoctoral training at The George Washington University’s Professional Psychology Program before joining its core faculty. She has written and presented on the intersections of psychoanalysis and issues of gender\, sexuality\, race\, and ability\, and she maintains a strong academic and clinical interest in the lived sequelae of what is termed trauma\, as well as linking trauma explicitly to systems of oppression. helen has a private practice in Washington\, DC\, where she is active in exploring with patients the roles of coloniality\, cultural norms and identity when considering what is termed abnormal or pathological or symptomatic\, particularly as it relates to challenging the white cishet ableist imperialist patriarchy. \nREGISTRATION LINK: https://wbcp.memberclicks.net/registration_cinema_4-26-24_xxy

Queer folks began speculating about the trans themes of the film shortly thereafter and speculation only increased as the film’s co-writers and directors\, the Wachowski sisters\, transitioned in the 2010’s. But it wasn’t until 2020 that Lilly Wachowski publicly confirmed that the film was originally intended as a trans allegory. This presentation will revisit the Matrix within this framework to explore themes of gender identity development\, coming out\, transitioning and societal resistance\, all within our current sociopolitical context of bills\, bans and violence against trans bodies. As the Matrix reminds us\, trans stories have always been here and always will be. \nDiscussant: \nCeleste Kelly\, PsyD (they/she)\, is a graduate and former postdoctoral fellow of the Professional Psychology Program of GWU\, currently working in private practice on occupied Powhatan land now known as Richmond\, VA. Their clinical practice focuses primarily on gender and sexual identity development\, trauma\, and couple therapy. They are interested in learning and writing about the intersection/interaction of therapist and patient identities. \n\n CE Information: \nContinuing Medical Education – This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the American Psychoanalytic Association and The Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis\, Inc. While Karyn Kusama grounds The Invitation in expertly rendered characters and a downbeat\, albeit slippery\, realism\, she hews closely to the mechanics of the horror narrative\, utilizing fantastical motifs to meditate deeply on resurrection\, grief\, and the diffusion of the self. In this discussion\, we will continue our celebration of the effectiveness of horror in portraying the profoundly human through the profoundly fantastical. We will work to peeling back the layers of horror to reveal the determinants driving the fantastical\, exploring how The Invitation iterates on themes of death and resurrection. We will also look at the classical horror motif of the cult and its representation in horror narratives\, examining its utility\, and the psychoanalytic underpinnings of the fascination of horror with cults and forbidden belief-systems. \n\nThere is no known commercial support for this program.\nCVs available upon request. \nCE Information: \nContinuing Medical Education – This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the American Psychoanalytic Association and The Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis\, Inc. SUMMARY:Psychoanalyic Takes on the Cinema: The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open

The film replicates a sense of feeling trapped through the use of real-time transitioning technique\, and in its unflinching gaze\, it challenges the viewer to consider who is oppressed/repressed/in need of emancipation. The film juxtaposes the traditional view of intimate partner violence as one of perpetrator/victim with the oppressive forces of coloniality\, whiteness\, and patriarchy. The film opens an opportunity to consider the role of the clinical situation and to challenge the therapist’s vulnerability to lapse into rescuer/all-knowing; additionally\, the talk will explore how coloniality splits off its violence into the racialized other and will invite examination of how those who are subjugated are reified as “victims” in an effort to preserve and instantiate the power and status of those performing and conforming to various interlocking systems of oppression. The talk will conclude with considerations for how examination of Indigenous wisdom and colonial violence are relevant to the field of mental health and the analytic/therapeutic situation. \n

SUMMARY:Psychoanalytic Takes on the Cinema (The VVitch)
DESCRIPTION:THE VVITCH \nOctober 28\, 2022 \n4:00 pm – 5:30 pm ET \nVia Zoom \nRegister Here: https://wbcp.memberclicks.net/registration-dc-cinema-vvitch \nRegistration Deadline: Wednesday\, October 26\, 2022 \nFor a complete list of dates\, presenters\, learning objectives\, and detailed CME/CE information see flyer on the registration page \n2015 (92 min) \nDirector: Robert Eggers \nDiscussant: Alex Smith\, Psy.D. \nA family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft\, black magic and possession. \n  \n*** Film must be viewed prior to event.*** \n  \nPresentation: Horror stories\, often repudiated as beneath other fiction genres\, explore dynamic processes to absurd\, disturbing\, and occasionally transcendent effects. Like all great horror narratives\, Robert Eggers’ The VVitch uses the language of horror to iterate upon anxieties common to the human experience\, chilling and aweing the viewer by revealing the fallibility of our hubristic attempts to manage impossible feelings and thoughts within ourselves. Often\, and sometimes through a mere insidious glimpse of the camera\, Eggers ambitiously addresses concepts ranging from the pitfalls of doctrinal rigidity\, the corruptive forces of moral and natural evil\, and the cosmic insignificance of humanity. \n  \nIn this talk—and given the season— we will celebrate the effectiveness of horror in portraying the profoundly human through the profoundly fantastical. We will briefly and incompletely consider creativity in horror as a means of working through powerful affects and conflicts\, honoring its generativity and cultural value. And\, in our appreciation and exploration of The VVitch\, we will identify several individual and group processes in the film\, including projection\, taking interest in the fantastical manifestation of this process in the film.
